For the city commuter, hub gears hold plenty of advantages. Best of all, they can be changed at a standstill - great for traffic lights and when you have panniers on the back - and they're also more trouser friendly. Hub gears pick up a lot less road crud and are easier to clean and maintain day to day too - a wipe down of the chain and few drops of oil will do. With the straight through drivetrain, chains last longer and novice riders won't have to deal with crossed chainline issues.
