  • Cow Lane Bridges (20/01/2008)
Network Rail has plans to close Cow Lane in order to realign the railway track. For cyclists and pedestrians this is a key route between West Reading and the Rivermead Leisure Centre, the Thames promenade and onwards to Caversham. We are campaigning for a crossing for cyclists and pedestrians to be included in the scheme. Help us by writing to your MP and Councillors. Follow the link for an example letter we have already sent to Martin Salter MP.

  • Sustrans' Connect2 (23/10/2007)
In June 2005 the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) and ITV announced a competition to find the winner of a £50 million National Lottery grant. The search was on for a groundbreaking project that would inspire communities to revitalise the areas where they live.
Connect2 is a UK-wide project that aims to improve local travel in 79 communities by creating new walking and cycling routes for those everyday journeys.

Connect2 is competing against 3 other competitors for the £50million. There will only be one winner though. The winner will be decided by a national vote, either by online or by telephone.

Further details can be found on the Sustrans Connect2 website.

  • Cycle Provision on the One-Way IDR (31/01/2007)
During 2006 Reading Cycle Campaign had a number of consultation meetings with the Council’s transport planners regarding cycle provision on the one-way IDR. Although we have got some of the things we asked for, provision still falls short of what we consider necessary. In January 2007 Reading Borough Council issued a Traffic Order to cover construction of the proposed cycle paths alongside the IDR . We have formally objected to the proposals - our letter of objection can be found here.
  • New Cycle Bridge Over Thames (07/05/2006)
Reading Borough Council is considering the provision of a new cycle and pedestrian crossing of the Thames as part of its ‘Reading Central Area Action Plan’. At present the Council has identified five options for the location of this new crossing and these are illustrated on an extract from the Council’s consultation leaflet (click here).

We have been canvassing members’ opinions on the options and so far location CT2 has found most favour. If you have an opinion then let us know by e-mailing rbc@readingcyclecampaign.org.uk

The full Reading Central Area Action Plan Issues and Options document can be found on RBC’s website (click here).

  • Bench in memory of active cycle campaigner (06/12/2004)
A bench in memory of Alan Furley - a very active campaigner for the RCC and CTC - has been installed near the fountain between the Rowing Club and the Holiday Inn where the CTC meet at the start of their Sunday rides. In order to mark the first Sunday the bench was in place, on 6th December it was dedicated in true cyclists’ style with coffee and cakes before they set off on their ride. Please do visit the bench whenever you can. Think of Alan, enjoy the view and above all keep cycling and campaigning – the best tribute to his enthusiastic campaigning. The Campaign Committee contributed to the cost of the bench on your behalf so I would like to thank you all very much for this. It is so good to have such a practical memorial to him.
